We are a tropical lifestyle company currently focused on creating innovative tools for opening coconuts and other fruits, which promotes a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.
Cocovana was founded by Sheldon Barrett while taking a semester off at the University of Florida after being diagnosed with high blood pressure. Prescribed medications did not lower Sheldon’s blood pressure enough. However, by drinking fresh coconut water he was able to normalize his blood pressure because of its high levels of potassium and vitamin C. Living in South Florida, Sheldon had coconut trees in the front yard, and his father would chop open coconuts for him with a machete. However, being born in America, Sheldon was not trained in the way of the machete and did not want to risk cutting his hand. To open his own coconuts when his father wasn't home, Sheldon created his own tool, “Coconut Twist”.
Sheldon Barrett graduated from the University of Florida in 2020 with a degree in Industrial & Systems Engineering and way too many minors including Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, & Sales Engineering. Sheldon’s skill set allows him to design and build prototypes himself, and work directly with manufacturers. Sheldon has won many national competitions, won many awards including 2018 University of Florida Student Entrepreneur of the Year, appeared in Forbes, Inc Magazine, ABC News, and was granted a utility patent. This traction has encouraged him to keep building his venture to change the way the world opens coconuts forever.
